Distillation: From Fire to Essence /\ RSVP for Saturday
Last month we tended the fire — Kindling and Hearth. This month, we gather around the still.
Creating an infinity container thru distillation.
Many have been asking, what do we do with the rise in our fire? With our anger and for many... rage? I take such questions seriously.
The obvious answer may be to burn it all down. But the alchemist knows another way.

Last month we cleared our hearths & kindled our flames, learning how to tend to a healthy fire. But our fires seek purpose, collective action.
Distillation is what happens when we use the flames that arise to play with the other elements. It is the process where we extract essence from what the fire reveals. Where heat turns the bath to vapor, vapor becomes condensation, and condensation becomes something clear enough to drink.
Distillation creates the lesson inside the story. It calls forward what is essential — and what is excess? So that we move forward, changed.
We are called to this integrative process when:
Experience has accumulated without being more fully processed
Change & intensity either has or hasn't destabilized your normal form
You're telling the same story on repeat and the repetition feels important
You're feeling burdened or confused by your experience
You've sensed something important happenedbut haven't yet named clearly, what needs to be learned
We all live many stories. Some are loud. Some are heavy. Some cling to us long after they’ve ended. Some reawaken after years of being closed. Distillation is the practice of releasing the weight while keeping the wisdom. It is how we metabolize experience so it nourishes rather than burdens us.
My Nana JoySee once taught me her vent rule: you may tell a story three times — no more. So choose wisely who you share it with. I now ask:
Is this someone who can hold spaciousness for my story or do they insert themselves, feeling urgency?
Can they match me and soothe the emotion or do they stoke the flames?
Can they see the lesson within it or do they get stuck in judgment?
Distillation is not suppression. Nor is it mindless repetition and retraumatization. The call to repeat is a call to distill, a call for digestion, leading to learning and growth.
The Art of the Alchemy
Distillation often begins when life heats up: a transition a loss a beginning a burden a rupture a revelation
Heat creates vapor. Emotion raises temperature. Change destabilizes form. But without a container, vapor disappears. With the right container, it condenses into something usable, meaningful, alive.

One story may distill into insight. Another story distills into clarity. Over time, those essences combine and become a new internal chemistry — a new way of seeing, feeling, and moving through the world.
This is why integration matters. Without distillation, experience remains chaos– just another story we never learn from. With it, experience becomes the medicine that updates our dispositional representations, the neural states that store information about how we're likely to act. It gives us direction for what we're now moving towards.
If the situation is ongoing, acute, or actively destabilizing, you may not be ready to extract the lesson. You can't distill something with a raging fire. Trying to extract essence mid-crisis often bypasses necessary feeling.
If you're feeling numb, dissociated, or in survival mode, distillation asks for a kind of reflective capacity that may not be available yet. The vapor needs to exist before it can condense. Last month's module, The Kindling & the Hearth (in our archive) may help with this.
We're not reaching for the lesson to avoid the grief. Acute grief and traumahave their own timeline. Asking what's the lesson? too soon can feel invalidating or even harmful. Some things need to be held before they can be distilled.
Distillation requires willingness to be changed by experience. If you're not quite there yet, that's more than ok. Being in community can still be helpful to both have a container of feelers to feel in, and to ready ourselves with a sequence to move into after the fire.
Distillation is what happens when our fire realizes it has a wash to heat up. Not rinsing away the heat but instead heating up the rinse.
Distillation teaches us that revelation requires time. Clarity requires containment. Essence requires patience.
You are not meant to rush this process. You are meant to catch the drops.
With devotion to your unfolding,

The infinity container Happy Birthday Nana JoySee Dear Reader, Tomorrow is my mentor and fairy god-mama, Nana JoySee's birthday! So we of course wanted to release another chapter from her book, Our Relationships with Our Children & the Child in All of Us. Beyond all polarities, I am. Dear Reader, "Beyond all polarities, I am." — Ram Dass I was at an East Forest show last night at the Rio in Santa Cruz with a group of beautiful humans. Before the show started, we talked about how important it is to just be — to find time to sit. Not with your phone. With the birds. The stars. The trees. The energy of people in the street, or the turkeys in the meadow. (This happened to be a predominant message running through the show, and where the Ram Dass...
